Kraken, Flyers Flip Prospects as Seattle Trades for Devin Kaplan
Ahead of Thursday’s season opener, the Seattle Kraken and Philadelphia Flyers swapped AHL prospects on an October 1 deal. The Kraken flipped 2022 second-rounder David Goyette for 2022 third-round pick Devin Kaplan.
Both prospects are bound for the AHL this season. A physical, 6-3 winger, Kaplan spent three seasons at Boston University and earned an NHL game at the end of the 2024-25 regular season. In his senior season with the Terriers, Kaplan had 10 goals and 18 points in 38 games while racking up a lot of penalty minutes.
The 22-year-old scored five goals and 13 points in 49 games as a rookie in the AHL last season. He also had 62 penalty minutes. Kaplan is on the last season of his entry-level contract and should slot into Coachella Valley’s bottom-six forward group to start the new season.
Goyette took a step back in his second AHL season, as the center prospect put up three goals and 10 points in 51 games. In the OHL three seasons ago, Goyette tallied 117 points in just 68 games. The offense hasn’t carried over to the pro ranks, at least not yet. The 22-year-old is on the last year of his entry-level contract as well and wouldn’t have been re-signed at his current scoring pace.
For general manager Jason Botterill, Kaplan fills a need in his AHL team for a physical winger who can play throughout the lineup. The Coachella Valley Firebirds will have forward prospects such as Jake O’Brien, Oscar Fisker-Mølgaard, Jani Nyman, and Jagger Firkus in the top-six and on the top power play. Goyette had been, seemingly, passed by these prospects.
But Goyette’s scoring history does make him the higher upside prospect of the two exchanged on Thursday. The Flyers will hope a change of scenery can help Goyette regain his scoring touch, while the Kraken hope Goyette will plug more of a hole in terms of what the organization needs roster-wise.
